Frederick Lea GRA is a Full Member of the Guild of Railway Artists. The Artist
Frederick Lea was born in Manchester in 1945 but grew up in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. He was educated at Cirencester Grammar School, and subsequently followed a career of some 30 years in the Civil Service. In his spare time he began painting as a hobby, and this developed over the years with much encouragement from family and friends. In 1996 he accepted the offer of early retirement and decided to set up his own art business, with a studio on the Promenade in Cheltenham. He continues to live in Cheltenham with his family. Frederick works mainly in watercolour but has also produced numerous pen and ink drawings and some oil paintings. His style is representational, and he always aims to produce a colourful and realistic portrayal of his chosen subject. His landscapes are in great demand and he has depicted most of the towns and villages in the Cotswolds and many other areas of Great Britain. He holds an annual exhibition of his work in the idyllic Cotswold village of Lower Slaughter. Another passion is for railways and Frederick is a full member of the Guild of Railway Artists. He has exhibited widely in Guild exhibitions including shows at York, Carlisle, Derby and on the Severn Valley Railway. For the past 25 years Frederick has been 'Resident Artist' on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, the preserved steam railway in the Cotswolds. He has steadily gained recognition within the wider Heritage Railway world, undertaking works for the Talyllyn, West Somerset and Bluebell Railways. In recent years Frederick has undertaken many commissions from private individuals and commercial companies, including artwork impressions for Architects, Local Authorities and National Magazine publications. Demand for his work continues to grow, and Frederick's paintings are now to be found in many private collections in all parts of the UK and as far afield as the USA and Australia. During the year 2007 he plans his usual full programme of Exhibitions, and to further expand his range of Landscape and Railway Prints and Greetings Cards. These are now available at an ever-growing range of outlets in the Cotswolds area, from many Steam Railway shops around the Country, and of course on this website. |
